History

1910

The Jaén Higher School of Industrial Arts is created by a decree issued on 23 July, paving the way for the current Higher Polytechnic School. A management committee appointed by the ministry and staffed by representatives from Madrid is charged with preparing the school to welcome students. Later in the year, the name is changed to Jaén Industrial School.
1911

On 1 October, the first courses in Mechanics, Electricity and Surveying begin at the Industrial School.
1924

The school is renamed the Higher School of Labour, depending on the Ministry of Labour, and the courses taught allow students to qualify as Industrial Assistants and Mechanical Technicians.
1937

The school’s activities are suspended, although several teachers retain their positions and an acting director and acting secretary are appointed.
1951 Following the Order of 3 September, teaching at the Industrial School resumes at the existing building on Calle Martínez Molina
1958 Following the demolition of part of the former Industrial School on Calle Martínez Molina, the school is provisionally transferred to a new building on Avenida Madrid
1961

The building housing the Technical School of Industrial Engineering, located between Avenida Madrid and Calle Virgen de la Cabeza, is inaugurated. One of the wings of the building is used to teach Industrial Engineering.
1969

The Order of 27 October changes the name of the Technical School of Industrial Engineering to the School of Industrial Technical Engineering. The reorganisation of technical study programmes reduces their duration from five years to three years.
1972

The school is incorporated into the University of Granada and its name is changed to Jaén University School of Industrial Technical Engineering. Students can qualify as Technical Engineers in Electricity (Power Plants and Lines department and Industrial Electronics department) and Technical Engineers in Mechanics (Industrial Structures and Installations department and Machinery Construction department).
1976

The study programmes taught on an experimental basis at the school since 1972 are approved via the Order of 16 December.
1989

The Polytechnic University School is created, incorporating courses on Technical Engineering in Topography into the list of industrial programmes.
1992 The school begins to offer courses on Technical Engineering in Computer Management. The area occupied by the Business Studies programmes is incorporated into the school
1993

Under Law 5/93, Jaén Higher Polytechnic School and the University of Jaén are created. From this point on, the school can teach courses on Technical Engineering in Mechanics; Technical Engineering in Electricity; Technical Engineering in Industrial Electronics; Technical Engineering in Topography; Technical Engineering in Computer Management; and Engineering in Geodesy and Cartography. The latter, a postgraduate qualification, justifies the school’s conversion into a higher education centre, meeting one of the legal requirements for UJA’s creation: to have at least one postgraduate programme in Technical Studies.
1994

Teaching on the Engineering in Geodesy and Cartography course begins.
1995

Teaching begins on the new study programmes in Industrial Technical Engineering, which are renamed Industrial Technical Engineering with a specialisation in Electricity, Electronics or Mechanics.

1996

The building housing the teacher training college on Calle Virgen de la Cabeza becomes part of the school and the Technical Engineering in Topography and Engineering in Geodesy and Cartography courses are moved there.

2000

The Engineering in Industrial Organisation programme begins.
2001

The first stone for the new departmental and teaching laboratories building at the Higher Polytechnic School at Las Lagunillas Campus is laid.
2004

The Engineering in IT course is launched.
2005

Teaching on the Industrial Engineering course begins. Work on the new departmental and teaching laboratories building at the school on Las Lagunillas Campus, named ‘Engineering & Technology’ (A3), is completed and the transfer takes place.

Combined programmes covering the three specialisations in Industrial Technical Engineering begin to be offered: Mechanics and Electricity, Mechanics and Industrial Electronics, and Electricity and Industrial Electronics.

2010

The School celebrates its 100th anniversary with an extensive programme of activities spread out throughout the year.

2010

The introduction of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) leads to a new programme of undergraduate and master’s degrees and the existing programmes are restructured. As a result, several new degree programmes are launched: Computer Engineering (formerly Technical Engineering in Management Computing) and Geomatics and Topographical Engineering (formerly Technical Engineering in Topography). In the Industrial branch, the new degree programmes are: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Electronic Engineering (formerly Industrial Technical Engineering and its corresponding specialisations).

2011

The new degree programme in Industrial Organisation Engineering is launched, encompassing modules linked to the Engineering in Industrial Organisation programme.

2013

The International Double Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is launched in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkaldens (Germany).

2014

The Master’s degrees in Computer Engineering and Industrial Engineering are available for the first time.

2017

The Master’s degrees in Mechatronic Engineering and IT Security are launched; they are offered by the school, but are affiliated with the Postgraduate Studies Centre in accordance with the University’s internal regulations. The Double Master’s degree in Computer Engineering and IT Security is launched, alongside the Double Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Industrial Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Organisation Engineering.

2018

The Double Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Electronic Engineering, as well as the International Double Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering with the Università degli Studi della Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’ (Italy), is launched.
